Amanda Freitas commented 2024-04-22 12:00:49 -0400I chose to be independent during a time when I was figuring out my own beliefs and who I wanted to be. I felt like it wasn’t the right time to pick a side. I was raised republican in a very republican state and my turn to vote came during a time in my life I was questioning the values I was raised on. I wasn’t ready to choose a side so I chose Independent. I came to love being independent because I believe there needs to be more parties in this country and less loyalty to one side. The fact that there are only 2 front-runners is ridiculous. I know there are more, but let’s be honest, if you vote for another candidate your vote basically goes wasted. It could mean the difference between who wins. We are also so pushed to pick one side or the other and it just isn’t right. It does get lonely in this state being an Independent and even more so someone who probably sides more with the Democrat side but I try to be proud. I keep hoping the people of this country will rise above it and not vote for either candidate just to show the government who should really be in charge. It would be wonderful if we all got together and said to hell with it lets vote for someone else & the 2 main parties got the least amount of votes.

Melinda Brown commented 2024-04-21 13:10:22 -0400When I was 18 I registered as an Independent because I honestly thought I’d have more options. I also don’t care much for the mudslinging from the other parties. I have the right to choose who I feel is the best candidate for the job and neither the Republicans or the Democrats have produced that person.

Teresa Bower commented 2024-04-21 10:51:09 -0400As a voter, I have the right to choose what I consider the best candidate to run the government. Why have only two people to choose from? That limits options in our “freedom to choose” country. There should be one vote per legal Americans, non-media censorship, no electoral, no lobbists, and term limits of six years. Pretty simple really.

Linda Myers commented 2024-04-21 09:02:55 -0400I don’t have an incredible story, I have a lifetime of observing of disingenuous politicians, spouting everything they hate a out each other, supporting obscene positions that a majority of Americans do not support. I truly believe laws should be made for the majority not the minority. When twenty percent of the country can dictate to the other eighty percent of us, good laws aren’t made.

Sage Crystalman commented 2024-04-19 16:18:52 -0400It’s simple wisdon. T choose one side is to be against another. I embrace the idea of the views and skills of a diverse people complimenting each other for a greater, collective cause! I honor the “United” virtue of our “States”. My roots are green (party), because it’s the world we come from, and need to susrvive.

Raymond McCabe commented 2024-04-18 14:17:31 -0400Both sides have good and bad policies. The Democrats believe that a woman is the absolute decision maker of her body. They also don’t hate gay people and minorities and their literature. The Democrats don’t like Putin and want to fund Social Security. The Republicans are serious about crime and want to stop illegals from invading. They also support Israel and cutting benefits for non-citizens.

Lenore F citezen commented 2024-04-17 17:46:26 -0400I’ve been voting Independent for years now, but it is even more noticeable these two past elections because of the person who is running. This two-party nation was never supposed to be a two-party nation, and now these parties seem to have lost their minds, especially in the past 20 years. The Republicans are getting more and more hung up on creating a “Christian nation” and the Democrats are not doing enough to fight back. Either way, I vote Independent because I don’t believe I can count on either side to have my back, so I vote with my conscience but even that is becoming almost impossible with the candidates they have had at the table. This country is getting farther and farther away from “For the people, by the people” every day.

Robert Smith commented 2024-04-17 15:10:04 -0400I can’t say I’m an “independent voter”. I could say I no matter who I vote for, they’re all bought and paid for by someone who is not me, but I still think everyone should be able to vote however they see fit.

Glen Barber commented 2024-04-16 12:38:55 -0400I’m not anymore – I’m a registered Democrat. Why? That is easy – the Republican Party consists to be hypocritical, lacks any tangible family values, and consists of criminals. Until I can vote as an independent, I will remain a democrat.

Daniel Briggs commented 2024-04-16 12:31:44 -0400I feel like people these days treat politics like sports. It feels like you have to go all in on either one team or the other. I’ve always been the type to hold beliefs from both democratic and republican parties but there’s also things about both parties I really hate. I can’t in good faith support either of them.

Cassie Kieley commented 2024-04-14 04:13:39 -0400I’ve chosen to be independent since I was 18. I ignored anyone’s remarks or advice on the matter. It just didn’t sit right with my soul at the time to claim I side with a cause or party that I didn’t even 75% agree with either way. I’ve never agreed with a system of choosing sides but individual ideas. I love my country and what we were founded upon and originally intended to establish. I love that religion and God were huge motivating factors behind most decisions with the founding fathers and I miss it being a positive influence still. I miss intuition being admired and valued and not dismissed to not even be considered for a second anymore. We talk a lot about going back to basics and to our roots or doing things more natural in our health and social lives and even work lives. Why would politics be any different? Let’s go back to basics. Let’s vote for the person and not for a party. Let’s vote base on virtue, integrity, charity, diligence, intellect, and negotiating and communication skills. Let’s vote on principle. Party’s have not served us well. It’s time for change. It’s time for progress. It’s time for the next generation to stand firm and steadfast and lead our elders out of the darkness they’ve grown so accustomed to and back into the light back on the path of justice and mercy. And forward to greatness and peace unlike any we have experienced before! Because yes it is possible!

Jerry Denk commented 2024-04-13 14:05:19 -0400I am 75 and have listened to nothing but lies from politicians my entire life . None of my personal issues have ever been fixed by any representative . When I was a child we were #1 in Education , medicine , housing , Lack of Hunger and now we can’t stop feeding the War machine ? Our values are money and money only . No rules , laws or regulations are enforced and we are run by the Corporate Dictatorship of the elites . History will have to repeat itself before any of these demons are held accountable . I give up

Glenda Van Tiem commented 2024-04-13 09:56:19 -0400I grew up believing that the only way I could vote was to choose to be Democrat or Republican. That anything else would be a dead horse. My vote wouldn’t be heard. I chose democrat, then I changed to republican . For a while I didn’t vote, because I felt it didn’t matter. Once I really got interested in the issues, I agreed to many things on both sides, one side more than the other. My daughter pointed out I should be independent, since I was more middle of the road than all one way or the other. I’m willing to listen to both sides in order to make a reasonable decision. That’s why I’m independent!

john migliore commented 2024-04-12 18:22:31 -0400“Don’t blame me I voted for McGovern” was a bumper sticker pasted on the back of my truck in 1972, when I was registered as a Democrat. I imagined the Democrats best represented my views on American society. By 1980, I had enough of “two sides of the same coin” and re-registered as Independent.

Grant Ahlman commented 2024-04-12 10:42:02 -0400When I first voted it was for Bill Clinton. My older Brother sat me down and kind of scold-educated me, and I thought wow, who knew he was this serious about politics. I got more into it, and started to examine things closer compared to how I felt. Well, I jumped ship and have been a Republican since. But since the Obama era, I just felt the 2 party system was NOT the answer, always wondering why there wasn’t more and better choices. I have voted Independent the last 3 elections, and feel better about my choice, but I also want a candidate who can WIN! I want to see a future where a 3rd and maybe even a 4th candidate are on the ballot. Voting for Hillary, Trump, or Biden is like voting for Satan himself, and no matter who wins America loses! I want to Give America a Choice that isn’t the Lesser of 2 Evils, or makes you feel dirty when you walk away from the voting booth.
Keep doing what you are doing, and I will keep spreading the word! -
James Bradley commented 2024-04-11 22:09:42 -0400I came to America from Scotland almost 20 years ago, knowing little about American politics nor living and working here. I came in the legal way and I am now a naturalized citizen. The two party system is not working – and has not been working for decades. Voting for either one of the two main parties is just flogging a dead horse, but there seems to be little motivation to change it. Independents can, should and WILL change it. For the better! I am not ‘big’ into politics but since I came here, I have been drawn in more and more. My perception, beliefs and motivation to take a proactive role in changing it here is not for me, but for my children, for ALL children. I am in my 60’s but these children are the future and we all have a moral, ethical and familial responsibility to sort out this mess and refuse to let our children inherit it. That is my take on it all.

John Higgins commented 2024-04-10 21:54:59 -0400I had just turned 18 years old when I had arrived in the RVN in 1970. The voting age was 21. There was a saying among most of us there . . . “Too young to vote, But not to die, Too young to Love, But too old to Cry.” The RVN was the real reason why they had changed to Voting age to 18. That is what all the Protesting was about back HOME. My friend, Patrick W. from MN and I were reading the Stars and Stripes (a military News Paper) in January or February of 1971 about Uncle Sam thinking of dropping the voting age to 18. So that started a full blown philosophical discussion between the two of us. Patrick asked what I was going to register as, a Dem. or a Rep.? I gave it some thought a replied that my parents were Democrats and maybe I’ll register as that. (My turn) How about you Pat? He too gave it some thought and said . . . Jack, you and I have seen a lot of BS politicians over here and all the politic games they play. Don’t you think they should show us what the sales pitch is and really try to sell us on their ideas or plans before they get our VOTE. Yea Pat, but don’t you have to be one or the other? Nope Jack, the Skipper said you can Register and Vote as an INDEPENDENT. It was signed into LAW or Ratified on July 1, 1971. So Patrick W. and I registered as INDEPENDENTS. Patrick W. left RVN (safely) in August 1972 and I left in early October 1972. WE BOTH GOT TO VOTE IN THE NOVEMBER 7, 1972 ELECTION. We have been INDEPENDENTS ever since.
I also found out later in life that those that Vote while serving our Country the United States of America are often slighted because the Government does not count ALL OF THEIR VOTES. We can send Satellites into other Galaxies but we cannot count the votes (to me) of The Most Important People . . . the Men and Women that are at the front line of danger. So, my point . . . let’s get that corrected too. -

Chloe Osward commented 2024-04-10 21:30:05 -0400I am an independent because I feel that democrats and Republicans don’t capture the scope of morals of so many people. George Washington warned us to not split into a two party system, and I understand why. The competition between the two parties is just that, a competition. I believe independent nominations would unite our country, rather than being black and white, red or blue.
-
Evelyn Dougherty commented 2024-04-10 17:36:33 -0400I’m an independent because I feel when your not tied to a party, you can challenge candidates that are running on any party line to respond and perhaps go on record with whatever you or your communities issues are that you want to see changed or addressed! Having independent voters helps keep candidates on their toes as they can’t just assume they’ll get so many votes in blue or red states- they have to work for them.

Fed up Citizen commented 2024-04-10 14:14:15 -0400We are divided because of the two party system. My choice to be independent is me saying fuck you to the system that is rigged against us. You think Biden or trump are the solutions. I think they’re a cancer. In fact I think the entire system needs to be abolished. We have the right to revolt when our government is no longer serving the people. We need to take action and revolt. Abolish the government and do not reinstate a two party system
