Makayla is spiritually independent, but her home state of New Mexico doesn't allow independent voters to vote in primary elections. Watch her explain why she feels that puts boundaries on voters.


"It felt easier to be like, "Oh, I'm going to be an independent voter." That just seems like the right path to go so all the options are open to me, not just one party or the other. And that's when my teacher informed me. 'You're going to limit yourself. You're not going to be able to vote for who is going to be the candidate now because you live in a closed primary state.'"
