Citizen Spotlight: Nothing About Me Had Changed, Except...
Lisa Rice is a lifelong DC resident and leader of the independent voter movement. She tells the story of her journey to independence.
"When I realized that I couldn't vote in the primary, my reaction was, 'It's bullshit, and I'm gonna change it.' There's nothing about me as a citizen, as a supervoter - I'd always voted in every election possible - so there was nothing about me that had changed, except for the fact I was no longer a member of a private organization. That just struck me wrong, and so I knew that was something I would fight to change. It's our right. It's the right of independents to be able to vote in taxpayer funded elections. I'm paying the taxes? I should be able to vote."
